Welcoming your kitten
A new territory, a new life… Here are a few tips to welcome your kitten in the serene atmosphere it needs.
The time when the kitten arrives in its new home should be as quiet as possible. A welcoming committee that is too noisy would be very frightening.
To accommodate it on arrival, it's best to choose a limited area that can easily be secured, such as a bedroom whose door will be shut.
That way, it can gradually become familiar with the other members of the household, noises and smells.
Then, it will strike out to discover the spaces available to it and get used to everybody's comings and goings.
Water and food should be made available in the room where it will be staying, each in a different container.
Whatever the chosen location, the litter box should always be placed as far away as possible from the feeding area.
Introducing kitten to other animals in your home
The kitten should be introduced to any pets in the home.
It is important to make the introductions quickly so that the kitten can learn to fit in.
However, it’s pointless to try to get it used to rodents or birds, as cohabitation is quite difficult to achieve.
With other animals, the introduction should be gradual and supervised.
A dog that has been properly socialized will readily accept the young kitten. British Shorthair and Scottish Fold kittens usually fit very easily to the new environment with other animals in the house.
With another cat, it can be slightly more difficult. An adult cat really does not appreciate the arrival of an adult cat in its territory. However it is not a problem with a kitten since kittens don't have yet their adult smell.
Many of our kittens live together with other animals: dogs, cats and have no problems adupting to new environment.
Safety
There are many potential hazards for a kitten. Even if it sleeps a lot, it's best to keep an eye on it, even if this means putting it in the room where it was first accommodated if you are going to be away for a few hours. The simplest things, such as running a bath in which it might drown, or opening a window with an accessible ledge, require the utmost vigilance.
Make sure the toilet seat & lid are down at all times. Kitten might fall in the toilet. If you have houseplants, make sure they are non toxic to cats.
Make sure cupboard doors are closed at all times & never leave the washing machine or dryer door open. Keep medicine & poisons in a child proof cupboard.
